Cape Town on Friday 2nd Stop

Our second stop of the day was at the V&A Waterfront.  Here we enjoyed the Two Oceans Aquarium, which specialized in marine life you would find in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

One of the first exhibits you see is the fish tank filled with clown fish. We found it funny that instead of identifying them as clown fish; they had a big sign above them that said "Nemos"!!!!

Jayce liked that we were able to get "inside" the aquarium and be surrounded by the fish!

Enjoying the fish!!!

Trying to get the jellyfish!

This was a skeleton of a seal, I think. But now I can't remember why they were showing it.

It was feeding time all around the aquarium. The octopus and the fish behind him are separated by a piece of glass. They fed the fish on the other side first and when they did, the octopus went and stuck his arms through some holes that are in the divider to steal the food from the fish. Then we watched them feed the octopus. Whatever they were feeding it; they dropped it in attached to a real thin stick and the octopus pulled it off of it.

Jayce trying to get the puffer fish.

These two were fighting over a piece of food.

Still fighting.

They offered a playroom for kids to play in and a place to sit and watch the outdoor penguins.

And a sandbox! Michael had a slush that he decided to share with Jayce!

Jayce: "Um more slush please!"

The African Penguins in their outdoor area.

We then watched the penguins walk from the outdoor exhibit to their indoor area to be fed. They walked right in front of us.

If you look closely behind the blue jeans is a stroller. That's me and Jayce, and the penguins were on the yellow line if that gives you an idea of how close we were!!!

There was a sign inside this area that explained that the reason these penguins coat looks rough is because it is their moulting season.

These penguins were in a different section and we were able to watch them be fed.

This penguin was guarding its nest.

Eating!!!

I know this picture is a little fuzzy, but the penguin in the middle jumped down from the top to hurry and get to the food.

Some other birds that were hanging out with the penguins.

It was also feeding time for this snake. In the second picture you can see it having dinner.

This next exhibit showed what the underwater life was like in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Cape Town.

Took this picture and the next for our nephew Roman. I didn't know there was a fish named Roman!

Jayce watching the fish!

The tall tree like vegetation is kelp. When you look out over the water in Cape Town you could see the kelp.

Front row seating!

On to the next tank! This one was home to many smaller fish, sharks, sting rays and 2 sea turtles.

Cleaning the inside.

Photo op while watching the sharks swim by!

On the day we went, they did a live feeding of the sting rays and sea turtles. In the back of this picture you can kind of see them with the food box.

Feeding the sea turtle.

The two aquarium divers worked as a team. One would feed the animals and the other would divert the sharks away. (They didn't want the sharks to take the food because they hand feed the sharks only on certain days.)

After the aquarium, we took a stroll on the waterfront.  In the picture below, the figure is made out of Coke crates. If you look closely you can see workers in yellow/orange outfits; now imagine just how big the figure is!!!

Just thought this was interesting to see how far and in which direction different places were. Chicago is  8490 miles away.

We stopped for sushi before heading out to our final stop of the day.  We had a really awesome selection of sushi. We also had fresh yellow tail. It was so good!!! Jayce was even getting in on the action and practicing his chop sticks skills!!!
